Nos referimos aquí a las encuestas extraordinarias que realiza la revista Locus Magazine entre sus subcriptores, llamadas en inglés Locus All-Time Poll. En ellas se recaba la opinión de lso mismos no sobre las mejores obras de un año concreto, sino acerca de las mejores obras o autores de todos los tiempos o de un periodo de tiempo concreto.

Ha habido varias encuestas de este tipo, realizadas en 1973, 1975, 1977, 1987, 1998 y 1999, recabando el parecer acerca de diferentes puntos, no siempre los mismos.

  • 1973: Autor favorito de todos los tiempos
  • 1975: Mejor novela de todos los tiempos
  • 1977: Mejor autor de todos los tiempos
  • 1987: Mejor novela de ciencia ficción de todos los tiempos
  • 1987: Mejor novela de fantasía de todos los tiempos
  • 1998: Mejor novela de ciencia ficción anterior a 1990
  • 1998: Mejor novela de fantasía anterior a 1990
  • 1999: Mejor autor de historias cortas de todos los tiempos
  • 1999: Mejor antología de todos los tiempos
  • 1999: Mejor recopilación de todos los tiempos

Cada vez se van dando a conocer más autores de ceincia ficción y la lista es ligeramente más larga que en la ocasión anterior. En cuatro años se han producido algunos cambios, pero los tres grandes maestros siguen encabezando la lista. Cabe destacar la fulgurante aparición de Ursula K. Le Guin.
