La narración detenida de sucesos aislados que cubren milenio y medio de historia recuerda a menudo a ''[[Fundación]]'' de [[Isaac Asimov]] y sus [[Crisis Seldon]]. Algunas de estas "crisis" son resueltas de forma más o menos arbitraria (como el sofoco del Islam en el 1365 a.u.c. Otras pueden sorprender a lectores poco interesados en la historia; por ejemplo el descubrimiento de América en el 1861 a.u.c. (el 1108 de nuestra era) puede parecer prematuro, pero Siverberg se basa en la personaje real de Harald y su descubrimiento de Terranova, y no parece descabellado suponer que, en una Escandinavia romana, lo que en nuestra línea temporal no fue más que una colonia vikinga pudiera convertirse en una ambiciosa aventura de conquista. El último episodio y su presunto segundo Éxodo es, simplemente, innecesario y superfluo.

Resulta interesante ver cómo, según Silverberg, al no haber una potencia real que oponga su poder a Roma ésta se anquilosa y, en general, el progreso científico y técnico se hace más lento que en nuestra línea temporal, espoleada por las frecuentes guerras entre países (excelente caldo de cultivo para la investigación militar). Por otra parte, se echan a faltar algunos detalles, como la indicación de la existencia o no de esclavos en determinadas épocas o la forma de vida cotidiana.

Sin embargo, y pese a lo que lo anterior puede dar a entender, ''Roma Eterna'' es un libro muy interesante. Reúne diferentes estilos y formas de narración y, en general, la mayor parte de los episodios son emocionantes.

Se trata, pues, de una lectura muy recomendable.
